Abstract

It is an admitted and common thesis: Descartes introduced the modern form of method and philosophical work, both characterized by their separation from the field of spirituality, self-care, asceticism and a whole way of life. It is considered that Foucault shared this thesis, which Pierre Hadot would criticize. In the present work we try to show that the way in which Descartes elaborated his method and his proposal does not fit the received thesis. In Descartes the old relationship between philosophy and spirituality, method and paideía is maintained. Having shown this, we finally point out how in him, however, the way was opened for the break that he did not practice.
