Abstract

This research analyses the electoral debates that took place in the regional elections in Andalusia in 2008 and 2012. Once the debates have been analysed, we look at whether they have any effects on citizens and what these effects are. This article presents the results of an investigation focused on determining how each of the three electoral debates took place in the two elections individually, following a two-stage analytical approach. This methodological strategy is divided first into a classification scheme, where the structure, image, audience and design of each debate is considered, while in the second stage, in the discourse analysis, an analysis is carried out on the following: 1/ the behaviour of the candidates based on the theory of functional analysis (Benoit, 2007), 2/ the meaning and strategy carried out by each of the candidates; and 3/ who was considered the winner of the debate. Finally, in order to make an approximation of the effects of the electoral debates in the electoral contexts analysed, data from the surveys carried out by the Centro de Análisis y Documentación Política y Electoral de Andalucía (CADPEA) were used.
