Abstract

Fight Club presents many stylistic characteristics from the postmodern film, such as narrative fragmentation, language games, violence against the acting bodies or the film itself, and so on. However, its roots —deeply modern— come from way back, because it embodies in an exemplary way the romantic fight against a present where they do not belong. For them, to destruct (the inherited world from Modernism and Capitalism or the temptation of Nihilism) could become the ultimate creative act. And so, in Fight Club, that apocalyptic tension, which is channeled by the sinister outburst of the protagonist’s double, also expresses the power will from Nietzsche's 'Last Man'. This is because Tyler Durden does not preach a postmodern individualism, but rather a collective goal: putting an end to Capitalism, restarting history, and building a new world where "you are stalking elk around the ruins of Rockefeller Center".
