Abstract

In this work, the results of the study of the water quality of the Furnia River (Pontevedra, NW Spain) using the aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages are presented. Semiquantitative surveys were carried out in autumn of 2007 and spring of 2008, and different indices based on these assemblages (abundance, richness, EPT, IASPT, Shannon-Wiener, IBMWP and % of feeding groups) were calculated. Several environmental variables that complemented the biological data were also measured. Although the indices decreased slightly along the water course, the results indicate a very good water quality of the Furnia River and a very diverse community of aquatic macroinvertebrates that must be conserved.
