INSTITUTIONAL APPROACH TO TRAFFICKING IN HUMAN BEINGS IN SPAIN: CRITICAL ASSESSMENT

Abstract
Trafficking in human beings constitutes a reality intrinsically linked to migratory flows that demands an approach focused on victim detection and protection. This study analyses its institutional approach in Spain based on a survey completed by 150 entities, units or agencies that may engage with it. The research focuses, on the one hand, on determining how cases of human trafficking arise and which entities are the most efficient at detecting them. On the other hand, on analysing the way in which victims are assisted and protected, including an assessment of the application of protection mechanisms provided by the Immigration Law to guarantee their stay in Spain. The results confirm that the institutional approach to trafficking in human beings remains focused on the sexual exploitation of foreign women and proposes alternatives to overcome this bias.
