Abstract

The gerontomigratory phenomenon is a national reality whose demographic concretion at the local level can affect the results of the elections in which they have the right to vote. This paper addresses the civic engagement of foreign retirees and analyses factors explaining their vote. This is a case study facused on the last local elections held in Spain. Apart from the corresponding data provided by the Spanish National Statistics Institute and the Spanish Home Office, the research draws on the results of a multidisciplinary survey carried out during 2020. Lifestyle foreign elderly behave to a large extent as the elderly usually do in political terms. In analysing factors explaining vote versus abstention, we have found Brexit to affect Britons behaviour.
