Abstract

This article deals with the electoral analysis of the 2024 autonomous elections in the Basque Country. Based on aggregate data, an assessment is made of the mobilisation patterns, the electoral evolution of the different competitors, the geographical distribution of their support and the main parameters of the party system and its basic continuity. The sample data from the CIS pre-election and post-election surveys, the post-election survey of the Basque Government's Gabinete de Prospección Sociológica and the Euskobarómetro database allow us to delve deeper into the factors that explain voting preferences, the moment of the voting decision and the reasons for it, ideological and identity polarisation, the characterisation of a competitive dynamic that is moderating and the raw volatility of voters. The particularity of these elections focused on the impact of the renewal of leaderships and, above all, the duel between the two main nationalist actors (PNV and EHB), without neglecting the settling of scores between the regional terminals of the national parties, called upon to complete the nationalist majorities in the face of a highly competitive horizon of alternation. To this end, the analysis has been completed with multiple linear regression models, the aim of which is to identify the factors that influence the assessment of the two main respective candidates (Pradales and Otxandiano) with a chance of winning.
