Abstract

This paper focuses on the decline in party membership in the United Kingdom, analyzing both its evolution and its causal relationship with political disaffection and the parties’ age. Firstly, a map showing this trend is constructed. Secondly, it is analyzed if the party membership decline is a general trend or if it only affects political parties with specific characteristics. Thirdly, the causal relationship between political disaffection and the parties’ age in the membership decline is studied. Finally, it is discussed whether a new kind of political party is appearing or not.
