Resumo

This study investigates the linguistic landscape of Vigo, Galicia’s most populated city. We employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, including inferential statistical approaches. Our results confirm previous studies in similar Galician contexts, showing that the national language, Spanish, is more frequently visible in the linguistic landscape of Vigo than Galician, the co-official regional language. Among several factors influencing the presence of language on linguistic signs, authorship (i.e., signs put up by private authors or official authorities) and the absence of other languages have been identified as the most significant predictors. The results can be interpreted as a consequence of governmental language policies, as well as the population's language preferences and attitudes.
